iciHaïti - Melissa : Increased mobilization in the South and Grand'Anse
On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, as Hurricane Melissa continued to affect Haiti, UNESCO strengthened its collaboration with the Civil Protection agency and humanitarian partners in the South and Grand'Anse departments.

Teams are closely monitoring the evolving situation, identifying the most vulnerable areas, and supporting priority actions to protect the population.

In the South, an emergency meeting was held between the Director of Civil Protection and the UNESCO regional team. This meeting allowed for an assessment of the current situation, identification of immediate needs, and coordination of the necessary interventions to strengthen the safety of residents.

In Grand’Anse, at the Departmental Emergency Operations Center, UNESCO is participating in the coordination efforts led by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP), the National Rally for the Development and Progress of Haiti (RANEPH), the International Cooperation Agency (COOPI), the Scouts, and the Alliance for Risk Management and Business Continuity (AGERCA). Together, the partners are assessing their logistical capacities and contingency stocks to respond effectively to the impacts of the cyclone.

In support of local institutions, UNESCO is contributing to crisis communication, community awareness, and the coordination of efforts aimed at protecting human lives and strengthening the resilience of communities in the face of this ongoing climate emergency.
