iciHaiti - Heritage : Collapse of the Charlotin Marcadieu house
The Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) reports the collapse of the Charlotin Marcadieu house, which occurred on the night of November 4th, 2025.

This house, a National Heritage site located in Dessalines, partially collapsed under the weight of its clay tile roof. The roof is believed to have become saturated with water during Hurricane Melissa, which caused an overload. Furthermore, poor heat exchange led to the rotting of the wooden structure, which had deteriorated over the past 20 years.

ISPAN, in conjunction with the local authorities of Dessalines, has already taken steps to obtain a legal assessment and conduct a preliminary investigation. The institute also takes this opportunity to express its sympathy to the occupants of the house who have suffered the consequences of this incident.

Owned by Colonel Charlotin Marcadieu, this house was built well before 1804 with a wooden frame, rubble masonry, and a flat tile roof. It had already been restored between 2004 and 2005.

To perpetuate the historical memory associated with Colonel Marcadieu, ISPAN will once again include the restoration of the monument in the "Development, Restoration, and Protection of Heritage Sites" project for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

In fact, most of Haiti's built heritage can be compared to elderly people in need of intensive care.

ISPAN thus reminds everyone that all of Haiti's historical sites, monuments, and city centers are in peril. To pass them on to future generations, it is essential that a comprehensive restoration program be urgently implemented by the State.
