iciHaiti - Good news : Southern farmers harvest a bountiful crop

In Haiti, there's an old proverb "Lapriyè pa sifi pou rekòt, fòk pran manchèt pou wete zèb" that means Prayer alone isn't enough to guarantee a harvest; you also need a machete to weed.

This proverb perfectly illustrates the situation of farmers in southern Haiti this year, a particularly fruitful year thanks in part to training workshops organized by the Taiwanese Technical Mission. The Mission developed an agricultural system adapted to local conditions, helping farmers transition from traditional practices to timely planting, thus improving crop growth and reducing losses due to adverse weather.

Fortunately, nature has been kind this year. Starting in February, each month brought 10 to 15 days of gentle, well-distributed rain, nourishing the soil without degrading it. As a result, rice, upland rice, grains, and vegetables have thrived.

Yet, bountiful harvests are never solely the result of nature. The persistent instability and insecurity in Haiti place immense pressure on farmers. Day after day, under a blazing sun, they carefully weed around each plant, cultivating every plot of land by hand. This work demands early morning rises, late nights, and unwavering resilience, proof that only perseverance leads to a harvest.

"The Taiwan Technical Mission to Haiti pays tribute to the tireless efforts of these farmers and the land that sustains them. Thanks to their hard work and responsible stewardship, our communities can thrive."
