In Cité Soleil, thousands of people are fleeing their homes

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the situation in Cité Soleil, a municipality in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, has continued to deteriorate since May 10, 2026, following an escalation of armed conflict between gangs. A new wave of violence in Cité Soleil is forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that more than 10,000 people were displaced between May 10 and 15, nearly double the initial estimate of 5,300. More than 70% of the displaced have found refuge in 20 sites, including five newly established ones, while the others have been taken in by host communities already stretched to their limits.

OCHA warns of a rapid increase in humanitarian needs in many areas. Assessments conducted by its partners highlight a high number of children separated from their families. Many displaced women have fled without their belongings, including essential hygiene items. Meanwhile, local organizations report that entire families remain trapped in affected neighborhoods, without access to basic necessities. Cases of systematic property destruction have also been reported.

The surge in displacement is severely straining already limited access to healthcare. Only 11% of healthcare facilities with inpatient beds remain fully operational in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.

OCHA is supporting its partners to rapidly assess needs and scale up the response, despite significant security and access constraints.
