Mexico : A Haitian deacon, about to be ordained a priest, dreams of returning to Haiti

Pierre Bachelet Thomas (34 years old), a deacon of Haitian origin, will be ordained a priest on August 4th, 2026, in the Archdiocese of Monterrey, Mexico. One of his greatest desires is to return to Haiti as a priest to serve his people.

He began his studies at the Notre-Dame Major Seminary in Port-au-Prince. During those years, the country was experiencing a profound, multidimensional crisis that worsened after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34162-haiti-flash-president-jovenel-moise-assassinated-by-mercenaries-official-updated-7am-+-video.html), a situation that facilitated the expansion and territorial control of armed groups.

In this context, Antonio Cavazos Bueno, a Marist layman living in Haiti, offered him the opportunity to continue his formation in Mexico and helped him connect with the Archdiocese of Monterrey.

He has lived in Mexico for three years and believes that the two nations share important elements of their religious identity, such as "love for the Virgin Mary, the feasts of patron saints, pilgrimages, the importance placed on family, and trust in God in the face of difficulties."

"My vocation was born and began to blossom in Haiti, but it matured, and that is why I carry Haiti and Mexico in my heart. This experience has also allowed me to understand that vocation knows no borders," he stated.

Although his priestly ordination is fast approaching, his return to Haiti will have to wait. On August 4th, he will be ordained a priest along with four other candidates at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey. He will, however, remain in Mexico for a while to specialize in civil law.

Yet, he stated : "I dream of returning to Haiti," not only with academic knowledge, but also with the necessary tools "to better serve the Church and all of society... I would be happy to return as a priest to accompany my people, especially during this very difficult time for Haiti. I want to serve where the Church needs me and be at the service of this community that awaits me, he declared.
