Grand'Anse : Handing over keys of 8 houses to vulnerable households

In the presence of local authorities, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP-Haiti) and Canada officially handed over the keys to eight houses in Corail (Grand'Anse department) to vulnerable families affected by the August 14, 2021 earthquake (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34498-haiti-flash-the-partial-death-toll-increases-nearly-1-300-dead-and-5-700-injured.html). This ceremony marked a significant milestone in a broader intervention that has resulted in the construction of 25 houses for vulnerable households in the communes of Corail, Beaumont, and Pestel.

For nearly five years, these families faced the aftermath of the earthquake, living in makeshift shelters while courageously and determinedly rebuilding their lives.

This project is part of the Post-Disaster Recovery Project (Phase II), implemented by UNDP with financial support from the Government of Canada. In total, the project enabled the construction of 8 houses in Corail, 9 in Beaumont, and 8 in Pestel.

Built using the Improved Local Construction Technique (ILCT) approach, these homes are designed to be safer, more resistant to earthquakes and climate hazards, while also being adapted to the local context (https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-44131-icihaiti-workshop-improved-local-construction-techniques.html). Beyond walls and roofs, they offer families a more dignified living environment and a solid foundation for facing the future with greater peace of mind.

Each key presented symbolizes the strength of solidarity and the importance of building sustainable solutions alongside communities. Thanks to the commitment of the Government of Canada, UNDP, and mobilized local authorities, 25 families now have safer housing.
