iciHaiti - Social : The Haitian back from DR, «are living in sub-human conditions...»

The Refugees and Returnees in the Support Group (GARR) reports that our compatriots returned to Haiti from the Dominican Republic "are living in sub-human conditions in various hosting sites to Anse-à-Pitres under damaged tents which are made of cardboard, straw and tarpaulin. Unsanitary conditions in which they live exposed to all sorts of diseases including cholera. Living under the weight of the dust and sun, they hope to be relocated. Despite the visit of several national and international organizations, they said they found that their situation did not really improve."

GARR is very concerned about the situation prevailing in the sites of Anse-à-Pitres and in surrounding communities. It calls on state officials and other organizations to rush to the aid of those families who live in a degrading situation and who express willingness to return to their native town.

To help them, the GARR organized end November, two awareness days in the Park Cadeau I and II, of Fond Jeannette and the community of Banane. 550 hygiene kits were also distributed to help families returned from the Dominican Republic to fight the cholera epidemic that has already made 17 deaths and more than 40 infected people in the commune.

The 330 families returned from the neighboring Republic occupy the sites Park Cadeau I and II

were gathered in one space, have actively participated in the GARR awareness sessions. Accompanied by civil protection agents, the GARR team focused on the danger of cholera and precautions to prevent contamination of the disease.
