iciHaiti - Health : More than 50% of the population is undernourished

According to a document on nutrition, the Ministry of Public Health for the period 2013-2017, reveals that food consumption has deteriorated in Haiti "It is estimated that nearly half of the Haitian population is still undernourished and consume less than 1,800 calories a day."

According to the statistics of 2017 "One out eight households has a diet that does not allow them to live a healthy and active life [...]" More than 50% of households have a poor diet or never consume fruit or vegetables, points out the document that indicates that the food pyramid proposed by the Ministry in 2017 is not within reach of these households.

"Some indicators (acute and chronic malnutrition, infant mortality, global hunger index) have improved. Nevertheless, hunger and malnutrition remain a major obstacle to sustainable development in Haiti" even if the document of the Ministry emphasizes a decrease of chronic malnutrition in the last 10 years.

Much remains to be done to keep Haiti on track to eliminate hunger, ensure food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)...
