iciHaiti - Politic : World Press Freedom Day
Renan Hédouville, Protector of the Citizen concerned about the respect and protection of the right to information, renews his attachment to the freedom of the Press on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day this Thursday, May 3, 2018 proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 taking place this year around the theme "Brakes and counterweights to power: media, justice and the rule of law"

Hédouville recalls that "in the current context, the media have a fundamental role to play in the citizens' demands for justice and their fight for the establishment of the rule of law in Haiti."

In addition, the Office for the Protection of the Citizen (OPC) National Institution for the protection and promotion of human rights takes the opportunity to express its full solidarity to the corporation of journalists, still in shock after the disappearance of the journalist photographer Mr. Vladjimir Legagneur https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24129-haiti-news-zapping.html since March 2018.

The OPC encourages state authorities to work harder to implement measures that can guarantee freedom of the press at the national level.

For his part in this day of freedom of the press, Georges Venel Remarais, the President of the Association of Independent Media of Haiti (AMIH) claims for journalists reasonable access to sources, particularly in the treatment of major issues of national interest. Stressing that this day is an opportunity to evaluate and reflect on the conditions in which journalists and press workers work. A day to take stock of the restrictions, threats and attacks that the press is facing and to find solutions.
