iciHaiti - Back to School : PAP demands sidewalks without merchants
The Mayor of Port-au-Prince, Ralph Youri Chevry recalls that for the reopening of classes on Monday, September 3, 2018, a set of measures was adopted by the Town Hall to reserve the sidewalks of the commune for the exclusive use of pedestrians, especially vulnerable users, schoolchildren, pregnant women, the elderly or persons with reduced mobility.

By virtue of the Decree of May 26, 2006, published in the Official Journal Le Moniteur, special issue number 1, governing the free movement on public roads, article 4 states "the sidewalk is the space laid out along a road, beyond a gutter and reserved exclusively for pedestrian traffic..."

As a result, Mayor Chevry is asking merchants, window dressers, luck game operators, used car dealers and anyone illegally occupying the sidewalks to release them as of Monday, September 3, 2018.

From this date, the Brigadiers of the Port-au-Prince Town Hall, accompanied by the constituted authorities, will proceed to the eviction of the offenders who harm the pedestrian circulation and the image of the city.

Chevry, while wishing a good school year to schoolchildren, renews his firm determination to make sidewalks a social living space where pedestrians must be able to circulate safely.
