iciHaiti - Environment : Workshop on environmental and social auditing

On Monday, the Ministry of the Environment, in the presence of Minister Jouthe Joseph, of Maximilien Pardo, UN Environment Bureau Chief in Haiti, of Director of the National Bureau of Environmental Assessments and of Director of the National Observatory of the Environment Environment and Vulnerability, organized a workshop to present and validate the methodological guides for environmental and social audits in Haiti.

In his opening speech Maximilien Pardo, the UN Environment bureau chief in Port au Prince, recalled that UN Environment supports the Haitian Government in the creation and use of crucial tools of governance for sustainable development, such as impact studies and environmental audits. Environmental standards and their application are not barriers to development, but mechanisms that ensure sustainable investments for resilience of populations, to the balancing of needs and economic, social and environmental priorities.

Minister Jouthe announced that the Ministry will take steps for the publication of an order on the administrative conditions and procedures of the Environmental and Social Audit, an important tool in the experimental phase that allows the closure of facilities or development projects, that do not meet natural resource management standards.
