iciHaiti - Economy : Towards enhanced customs cooperation with DR 29/02/2020 08:43:14
Under the aegis of the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the European Union, Romel Bell, Director General of the General Administration of Haitian Customs (AGD) and his Dominican counterpart Enrique A. Paniagua, in the presence of Gianluca Grippa Regional Vice-President for the Americas and the Caribbean of the WCO and the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Dominican Republic, recently participated in Santo Domingo to a workshop on the role of customs in the movement of goods at the level borders. During this workshop, Haiti stressed its intention to strengthen customs cooperation with the Dominican Republic to combat smuggling and increase the collection of taxes, explaining that Haiti's objective was to recover $450 million in royalties from the border to reduce its deficit, revenue which is lost by the Treasury to the benefit of smuggling due to the lack of surveillance, rigor and corruption A goal repeatedly repeated in recent years in Haiti which has always lacked the support of a firm political will and which has also "collided" with powerful groups in Haiti which profit from smuggling and reduce to zero the efforts of the Government...
