"The Rectorate of the State University of Haiti (UEH) learned with sorrow and dismay the news of the death of Father Claude Souffrant, retired professor of the UEH, which occurred on the morning of Wednesday January 26, 2022.

Former Dean of the Faculty of Ethnology, Professor Souffrant was a committed intellectual who devoted a good part of his life to the service of this faculty where he taught for many years subjects such as prospective sociology, the sociology of literature and rural anthropology.

Author of several works, Father Souffrant received various distinctions including the Jean Price Mars Medal in November 2015 from the "Languages, Discourses REpresentations (LADIREP)" Laboratory of the Faculty of Ethnology of the UEH "for his multiple contributions to the advancement of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Haiti."

The Rectorate bows before the remains of this eminent figure of our intelligentsia and presents its deepest sympathy to his family, to the entire community of the UEH, in particular his former colleagues and students of the Faculty of Ethnology, to the congregation of the Jesuits, to relatives and friends affected by this bereavement."
