iciHaiti - Obituary : Passing of the sociologist and former professor of FASCH

The Rectorate of the State University of Haiti (RUEH) learned with great sadness the news of the death of the sociologist and former professor at the Faculty of Human Sciences (FSH), Bernard Ethéart at the age of 87, occurred on January 18, 2024 in the state of Florida (USA).

"Iconic figure of the vast democratic and popular movement of the period 1986-1987, Professor Ethéart is best known as an activist in peasant struggles and an ardent defender of the Agrarian Reform provided for by the 1987 Constitution. He was the first Director General of the National Institute of Agrarian Reform (INARA). His columns published in the weekly 'Haïti en Marche' and his radio broadcasts on the environment and rural development were greatly appreciated.

Professor Ethéart has trained several generations of students at the Faculty of Human Sciences through his rural sociology course. He is the author of a reference work on'The land issue in Haiti' which represents a true x-ray of the land system and the agrarian question in Haiti.

The Rectorate of the UEH respectfully bows before his mortal remains. He presents his deepest sympathies to the grieving family, particularly to his wife the excellent journalist Elsie Ethéart, to his colleagues from the weekly 'Haïti en Marche' and to Radio Mélodie including the Director Marcus Garcia, to the university community, particularly his colleagues and students of the Faculty of Human Sciences, to the parents and friends affected by this bereavement."
