iciHaiti - FLASH : Cuba launches an evacuation operation for its citizens stranded in Haiti

Friday April 19, 2024, More than 250 Cuban citizens, who had gone to Haiti to make purchases, stranded in Haiti for almost two months began to be evacuated from Port-au-Prince in a bus convoy to Cap-Haitien (a five-hour journey from Port-au-Prince, complicated by crossing several areas controlled by gangs) where they will be transferred to Cuba on Sunrise Airways flights.

The first flight with 40 Cubans on board was carried out safely and without incident to Ignacio Agramonte International Airport, in Camagüey, 500 kilometers east of Havana. The same process will be repeated until the transfer of all Cubans is completed.

This is an operation coordinated by the Cuban Authorities, various Ministries, the Cuban Embassy in Haiti and the permanent support of those responsible for the Cuban Diplomatic Mission.

The Director General of Communications of the Ministry of External Affairs, published on his X account "All the conditions were met for the voluntary and safe return [...] It is an operation of great importance and magnitude."
