iciHaiti - Heritage : Bois Caïman listed by UNESCO
The Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO announces the historic inscription, on October 9, 2024, of the Bois Caïman site in the UNESCO Network of "Places of History and Memory Related to Slavery and the Slave Trade", thus becoming the first Haitian site to join this global register, during the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the UNESCO Routes of Enslaved People Program, a program initiated by Haiti and Benin in 1994.

Submitted in January 2024, the Bois Caïman candidacy is part of the Haitian Government's initiatives to promote national heritage.

Bois Caïman, which was the scene of a socio-political ceremony in August 1791, symbolizes the struggle for the abolition of slavery and the independence of Haiti. This site embodies the universal values of freedom, equality and dignity.

As a symbol of resistance and the quest for self-determination, Bois Caïman remains an essential milestone in the history of the Haitian Revolution and the formation of the Haitian State.

Classified as a national tourist heritage site since 1982 and declared of public utility in 1995, Bois Caïman is now a universal symbol of emancipation. Its inclusion in this Network reinforces its role as a catalyst for a global dialogue on the history of slavery and the struggles for freedom.
