iciHaiti - UN : In memory of the victims of the earthquake of January 12, 2010

"As Haiti commemorates 15 years since the devastating earthquake that struck the country on January 12, 2010, the United Nations in Haiti pays tribute to the memory of each and every one of the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives, among them, 102 of our colleagues; families shattered and communities transformed by this disaster.

This tragedy has marked the country materially as well as humanly and spiritually, forever the memory of this Nation, the United Nations and the international community.

We express our solidarity with all those whose lives continue to be affected by this tragedy. We salute the determination, heroism and resilience of the Haitian people who reacted with courage in the aftermath of this cataclysm, and continue to do so every day.

At this time of remembrance, we the United Nations in Haiti reaffirm our promise and our commitment and conviction to continue to work alongside the Haitian authorities and people to build a future based on hope, dignity, peace and prosperity.

May this day be a reminder of our shared responsibility towards Haiti and its people, and of the strength that emerges from human solidarity."

María Isabel Salvador

Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH)
