iciHaiti - Haiti needs food aid, according to the FAO 12/03/2025 10:14:06
The latest report (March 2025) "Crop Prospects and Food Situation" from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reveals that Haiti is among the 45 countries in need of external food assistance. In Haiti, an estimated 5.5 million people, nearly half of its population of 11.5 million, will face acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 4) between March and June 2025 (food deprivation that threatens lives or livelihoods, or both, regardless of the causes, context, or duration), including some 5,600 people in Phase 5 (the highest level of the IPC: Famine/Humanitarian Crisis : a complete lack of access to food and/or other basic needs in which widespread starvation, death, and displacement are undeniable).
The situation in Haiti, according to the report, is the result of a persistent six-year economic recession, low domestic food production, high food prices, fuel shortages, and major natural hazards.
It should be noted that the increase in insecurity, aggravated by the rise in Gang violence has hampered access to food and essential services and led to the internal displacement of more than a million people https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44066-haiti-flash-more-than-a-million-people-in-haiti-have-been-displaced-by-violence-2024.html .
