iciHaiti - Security : Civil Society Initiative appreciates creation of the Gang Supression Force
The Civil Society Initiative (ISC) acknowledges the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2793, providing for the deployment of a Gang Supression Force (GSF) in Haiti. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45891-haiti-flash-the-security-council-has-voted-for-the-new-gang-repression-force.html

It appreciates the initiative taken by the United States of America and Panama to present this resolution, as well as the favorable vote of the vast majority of Council members.

The ISC also notes that Russia and China did not veto this important decision, which offers our country a real opportunity to emerge from chaos, slow the disintegration of the state, and halt the collapse of the nation.

The ISC welcomes the resolution's provision for increased support for the Haitian National Police and the Haitian Armed Forces, as well as close collaboration between the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS) to promote peace and stability in Haiti.

The success of this initiative will depend on the international community's commitments, but also on the responsible participation of Haitians themselves. We must relentlessly combat any complicity or tolerance of gangs, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, and the criminal economy in all its forms. Criminal groups must be effectively disarmed.

It is also essential to work to reduce social inequality and the extreme poverty that affects a large segment of the population. Far-reaching reforms are necessary to establish governance based on the rule of law, democracy, and respect for human dignity. Strengthening sovereign institutions, particularly the judicial system and security forces, remains a priority.

Haiti has too often missed opportunities to reform and embark on the path to modernity and development. The time has come to mobilize and act together.
