iciHaiti - Museum : Learn more about MUPANAH, guardian of Haitian heritage
Established by presidential decree signed on October 20, 1982, the building housing the Museum of the National Pantheon of Haiti (MUPANAH) was constructed between June 1973 and December 1974. Designed by the French architect Alexandre Guichard, it was built by the Haitian architect Albert Mangonès. The Museum was inaugurated on April 7, 1983.

Located on the Champ-de-Mars, the Museum preserves the remains of the Fathers of the Nation, as well as artifacts, objects, and archives that constitute Haiti's historical, cultural, and artistic heritage.

MUPANAH's mission is to perpetuate and disseminate the memory of the Fathers of the Nation, to formulate, in accordance with the objectives set by the government, a general policy for the establishment and administration of historical museums throughout Haiti's regions and local communities, and to participate in the preservation of heritage and the dissemination of national culture.

The museum houses a sarcophagus containing the symbolic remains of the Founding Fathers of the Nation. It also contains the silver rifle with which Henry Christophe committed suicide in 1820, the bell that announced the country's independence in 1804, chains used by colonists for slaves, several objects used by Toussaint Louverture including a large Assotor drum, a sword belonging to Alexandre Pétion, a portrait of Henry Christophe, and

the anchor from the Santa Maria, one of Christopher Columbus's caravels.

The Museum of the Haitian National Pantheon (MUPANAH) houses a significant collection of over a thousand works of art, decorative objects, archaeological artifacts, historical documents, and other items. For more than 40 years, MUPANAH has been tirelessly committed to safeguarding, promoting, and transmitting our rich National heritage.
