iciHaiti - BRH : Towards the formalization of the informal sector
The Boar of the Central Bank of Haiti (BRH), accompanied by the institution's technical staff, held a videoconference this week with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Haiti, represented by its Coordinator, Ariel Pinot. This virtual meeting initiates a collaboration focused on three priorities : formalizing the informal sector, financial inclusion, and digitalization.

The observations shared by both institutions underscore the urgent need for action.

According to the "FinScope MPME 2023" study, more than 89% of small businesses operate in the informal sector. The ILO also notes that the social and solidarity economy plays a crucial role in the population's livelihoods.

Together, these factors demonstrate the need to strengthen support for the most vulnerable economic actors.

In this context, the BRH is already implementing several structural initiatives. It oversees savings and credit cooperatives and microfinance institutions and supports economic development through Circulars 113 and 130. In parallel, it is leading a digitalization project aimed at expanding access to financial services for informal sector actors.

The planned cooperation with the ILO will strengthen these initiatives. It will focus in particular on capacity building through the Central Bank's Training Institute, improving the collection and analysis of data on the social and solidarity economy, and supporting the "Booster SME" program (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46360-haiti-entrepreneurship-forum-the-brh-presents-its-program-booster-pme-iii.html) and the digitalization of small businesses.
