The Directorate of Immigration and Emigration hereby notifies all heads of Regional Offices and Identity Document Reception and Delivery Centers (CRLDI) throughout the country that, as of January 6, 2026, an update to the passport personalization software has been installed.

In this new version, the Tax Identification Number (NIF) has been replaced by the Unique National Identification Number (NINU), which consists of ten (10) digits.

Therefore, it is mandatory for all passport applicants over the age of 18 to present their National Identification Card for :

• Obtaining a new passport application;

• Renewing a passport;

• Replacing a lost or stolen passport;

• Authorization for issuance (parent, guardian, or representative) in the case of a minor's passport application;

• Identification of a spouse in the case of a passport application for a married woman;

• Replacement of a passport full of stamps and/or visas;

• Identification of a person to contact in case of emergency in all passport applications.

Important reminder to all Data Entry and Verification Operators : All fields available in the passport personalization software must be completed with consistent and reliable data.
