iciHaiti - Environment : Resurgence of illegal sand quarrying

From March 23 to 27, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen environmental protection in Haiti, the West Departmental Directorate of the Ministry of the Environment (DDO/MdE) is launching a week of specialized training in environmental inspection.

This initiative aims to equip environmental inspectors with enhanced technical skills to better prevent, detect, and address environmental offenses. It comes in a context marked by a resurgence of illegal exploitation of natural resources, particularly sand quarries in the West Department, with significant impacts on ecosystems and public safety. Faced with this increasing pressure, the DDO/MdE intends to consolidate its operational capacities to ensure a more effective presence in the field.

This training will enable inspectors to improve their skills in identifying offenses, intervention procedures, and coordination with relevant institutions.

Participants will also be trained to collaborate closely with key institutions, such as the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME) and the National Bureau of Environmental Assessments (BNEE), to ensure rigorous monitoring of mining activities and compliance with environmental standards.

Valéry Fils-Aimé, the Minister of the Environment, also plans to implement awareness-raising activities for the media, environmental organizations, police authorities, and judicial bodies.
