Haiti : Coastal Zone Protection 25/03/2026 10:33:18
As part of its efforts to preserve ecosystems and promote sustainable development, the Ministry of the Environment, through its Southern Departmental Directorate (DDS), organized a series of activities from March 18 to 20, 2026, in the first communal section of Port-à-Piment, under the theme "Let's Protect Coastal Areas to Secure Our Future". This initiative mobilized 60 participants, including 30 young people and 30 adults, reflecting an inclusive and participatory approach to the sustainable management of natural resources. Participants took part in two days of training focused on environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources, followed by a third day dedicated to a reforestation project. These activities helped initiate a process of ecological restoration of the Pernelé pond, an essential resource for the local community. As part of the European Union’s Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) program, which supports climate resilience building and the development of local initiatives for the sustainable management of natural resources, several hundred trees were planted on approximately 3.5 hectares. A support system was put in place, including the deployment of four staff members for two months to ensure the watering, monitoring, and protection of the saplings. In addition, incentive bonuses were awarded to landowners who made their plots available for the project, to reinforce their commitment. The local population welcomed this initiative, expressing their satisfaction and commitment to preserving the project’s achievements, in a spirit of community empowerment and sustainable natural resource management. They also expressed their gratitude to the Ministry of the Environment and the Southern Departmental Directorate for this significant intervention, which they considered a first in the local community. Through this action, the Ministry of the Environment reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable coastal zone management by strengthening community resilience and valuing local approaches to ecosystem protection.
