Donation of 1 Million USD to support the Humanitarian Air Service in Haiti

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received new funding of US$1 million from the Government of Japan. This new contribution is specifically allocated to the project entitled Ensuring Humanitarian Air Access Amid Escalating Crisis in Haiti, implemented to support the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS).

These flights are essential for the various actors within humanitarian organizations to respond to the multiple crises facing Haitian communities.

The funding from the Japanese Government strengthens UNHAS's capacity to address the logistical challenges posed by insecurity and other access constraints, particularly through its helicopters, given that the capital's airport, Port-au-Prince, has been inaccessible since 2024 and a large part of the capital remains under the control of armed groups.

More than 180 humanitarian and development organizations in Haiti rely on UNHAS for their missions serving the affected populations. In 2025, UNHAS transported more than 22,400 passengers to nine destinations in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

"We are very grateful to the Japanese government for this generous contribution," said Wanja Kaaria, WFP Country Director and Representative in Haiti. "Without this funding, which allows UNHAS to continue flying throughout the country and reaching the capital, humanitarian organizations would not be able to meet the critical needs of the Haitian people."

Nishiuchi Kazuhiko, the Japanese Ambassador to Haiti, stated, "Through this financial support, the people of Japan are renewing their commitment and solidarity with the Haitian people. Ensuring this vital access to all vulnerable communities is now an absolute priority for human security."
