The Ministry of Tourism salutes the exceptional contribution of the Haitian diaspora

The Ministry of Tourism salutes the exceptional contribution of the Haitian diaspora

On the occasion of the celebration of the 15th edition of National Diaspora Day, the Ministry of Tourism joins forces with the Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) to salute the exceptional contribution of the Haitian diaspora to the economic, social and cultural development of the country.

In her intervention Stéphanie Smith, the Minister of Tourism, recalled that the celebration of this day finds its basis in the increased presence of the diaspora in our daily lives.

She stressed that this activity constitutes much more than a symbol, reflecting the recognition of the Haitian State towards its citizens living abroad, whose constant commitment remains a pillar in critical moments.

With this in mind, Minister Stéphanie Smith highlighted the strategic role of the diaspora in the national economy, with transfers estimated at nearly 5 billion US dollars for the year 2025, or approximately 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to data from the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH).

She insisted on the need to go beyond recognition by working towards effective integration of the diaspora in the management of public affairs, particularly through its participation in electoral processes and its involvement in structuring sectors such as tourism.

In this perspective, the Ministry of Tourism reaffirms its commitment to mobilizing the diaspora as a strategic lever for promoting and enhancing the image of Haiti. Considered a true “tourist breeding ground of the 21st century”, the diaspora is called upon to play an ambassadorial role, actively contributing to the development of national heritage and the development of sustainable investments for the benefit of the country.
