Haiti Environment : «Let's act today to save tomorrow»

On Friday, May 1st, 2026, the Northwest Departmental Directorate of the Ministry of the Environment (MdE) celebrated Agriculture and Labor Day with technical support from the MdE's Integrated Watershed Management Directorate and financial support from the Trois-Rivières Climate Resilience Project, implemented by HEIFER International and funded by the Green Climate Fund.

This day of celebration mobilized the population of the Chansolme commune for a community awareness walk followed by a day of planting and distributing high-value fruit trees on the degraded slopes of the Zabethe Spring, located in the 1st Bion section of Chansolme.

Under the theme "Climate Change : Let's Act Today to Save Tomorrow" this initiative brought together more than 200 schoolchildren who had participated in the climate change awareness campaign last April, along with teachers and school principals, representatives from the Chansolme Town Hall, members of local organizations, members of the Chansolme Community Development Council, and staff from the Northwest Departmental Directorate of the Ministry of Environment and the Environment (MdE) and HEIFER International.

This activity resulted in the planting of approximately 700 fruit tree seedlings on nearly 1.5 hectares of steep slopes, contributing to the site's revegetation efforts. It also included the distribution of several hundred fruit tree seedlings to the local population.

It should be noted that Source Zabethe is an area of significant ecological value, acting as a vital water tower upstream from downtown Chansolme. This strategic site plays a fundamental role in the supply of drinking water, particularly for the municipalities of Port-de-Paix and Chansolme, through the capture and operation of several springs by the National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA).

Through this initiative, Valéry Fils-Aimé, the Minister of the Environment, via the DDNO (Directorate of Water and Sanitation of Northwest Haiti), reaffirmed his commitment to promoting concrete actions for environmental rehabilitation and ecosystems, the protection of natural resources, and the fight against the effects of climate change in Northwest Haiti.
