Ecovert-Haiti : Environmental emergency in Métivier

Less than a week after the alert issued by the organization Ecovert-Haiti, a joint delegation from the Ministry of the Environment (MdE) and the National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS) visited the highlands of Métivier, at the foot of Morne l’Hôpital (Boutilier).

This assessment visit follows serious concerns expressed by residents of the area regarding the 2026 hurricane season, which has just begun.

On site, the findings of the authorities and Civil Society Organizations are alarming. The level of unregulated construction raises serious questions about the State's presence. Houses are built directly on the sides of the ravine, exposing residents to the risk of landslides.

In addition to this structural vulnerability, there is critical unsanitary conditions, posing severe health risks to a local population trapped in a situation of extreme poverty.

Faced with this imminent danger, Ecovert-Haiti commends the Ministry's responsiveness in sending a team to the site after the alert was raised. However, the organization emphasizes that the urgency of the situation now demands concrete action.

Ecovert-Haiti, a civil society organization, calls on the Ministry to immediately mobilize all relevant stakeholders to create an intervention force commensurate with the scale of the challenge.

Without swift and preventative action, the consequences of even a single torrential downpour could prove catastrophic, with a major risk of flooding of the Juvenat Bridge below.
