On Thursday, July 22, 2026, the Ministry of Public Health received a donation of 10,000 doses of human rabies vaccine at the PROMESS warehouse. The donation was provided by the Government of Brazil through the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The delivery of this significant donation to Haiti was made possible through the joint efforts of PANAFTOSA, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the logistical support of the World Food Programme (WFP), which facilitated the air transport of the vaccines to Port-au-Prince.

This donation comes at a time when rabies remains a public health threat in Haiti. Between the first and twenty-fourth epidemiological weeks of 2026, 1,481 attacks by animals suspected of having rabies were reported in the country, including 3 deaths, with the situation remaining concentrated in the Central and Western departments. Although this disease is preventable with prompt treatment after exposure, it is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Access to rabies vaccines is therefore essential to protect populations exposed to animal bites.

Thanks to this contribution from the Brazilian Government, health authorities will have a strengthened stockpile, enabling them to improve the care of people exposed to rabies and support prevention efforts in several departments of the country.

This initiative illustrates the importance of regional solidarity and coordinated international cooperation in addressing health challenges. It is part of the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), with the support of friendly countries like Brazil and the United States, and its partners like the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), to reduce the risk of rabies-related deaths and ensure better access to essential health products.
