iciHaiti - Heritage : Fire of the Chapel of Milot, reaction of the UN and UNESCO

The United Nations in Haiti and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) share the emotion of the Haitian people following the fire that ravaged on the night from April 12 to 13 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-30523-haiti-flash-the-royal-chapel-of-milot-world-heritage-destroyed-by-fire.html the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the commune of Milot (Dept. of the North), one of the most beautiful jewels of the heritage of this country whose domed roof had been completely rehabilitated in June 2017 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21669-haiti-heritage-repair-of-the-dome-of-the-royal-chapel-of-milot.html

The United Nations system in Haiti salutes the heroism of the women and men of Milot who, for almost 24 hours, did everything to save their monument, their pride, their memory. We also salute the courage of the firefighters deployed to fight against the flames in a final effort to save this Mecca of memory and Catholicism in Haiti, built between 1810 and 1813 under the reign of King Henri Christophe.

Currently, the chapel is part of the sites receiving technical assistance from UNESCO and the Heritage Preservation and Support to the Tourism Sector (PAST) project implemented under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture and Communication through the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) and co-financed by the Haitian State and the World Bank.

The United Nations system in Haiti and UNESCO will be attentive to the results of the investigation announced by the authorities, to shed light on this unfortunate event.

Expressing their deep sadness for the incidents which affected the National Historic Park : Citadelle, Sans Souci, Ramiers, the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations system in Haiti as well as the Representative of UNESCO in Haiti wish to assure the people and Haitian authorities support the United Nations to consider commensurate solutions with the priceless value of the site of the Immaculate Conception Chapel.
