On May 15, hundreds of Haitians entered Dominican territory to obtain food and other miscellaneous goods through the border zone of El Carrizal, in Comendador, (Elías Piña) because the area has no perimeter fence. However, determined Dominican soldiers provide extensive surveillance around the area, to prevent Haitians from continuing to penetrate further into Dominican territory...
The desperation faced with the food shortage in Haiti, forced them to reach the border to buy rice, chickens, eggs, bananas, herring, sardines, vegetables, pasta, beans among others...
A local Dominican resident said that since the border was closed he had never seen so many Haitians enter Dominican territory.
