iciHaiti - Education : Local agriculture today feeds nearly 50% of schoolchildren

Since 2015, the World Food Program (WFP) has been sourcing from local producers to supply school canteens. In 2015-2016, the local market only supplied 1% of beneficiaries, or around 3,500 students out of nearly 500,000.

Today, producers feed nearly 50% of the beneficiaries, or nearly 230,000 students according to WFP figures.

Jean Martin Bauer, WFP Country Director, recalls “We purchase more than $1 million worth of products every month from small producers. 5,200 hectares in Haiti are allocated to the canteen program. We estimate that we have created more than 1,000 jobs for the processing of these products at the level of producer organizations which are everywhere, in Nippes, the South, Grande Anse, Artibonite, the North and the Center… Net income increased by more than $800 per producer. We currently work with 6,000 producers across 150 organizations

Coverage of the school canteen program is increasing, with the recent inclusion of the North, North East and Center departments. The onjective is to provide a daily hot meal made from 100% local products to all students by 2030.
