iciHaiti - Central Dept. : Collection of native and endemic seeds
The Department of Forests and Renewable Energy (DFER) of the Ministry of the Environment continues its activities as part of the annual campaign to collect native and endemic seeds of Haiti, essential for the preservation and reforestation of the country. After the West and Northeast departments, it is the turn of the Departmental Directorate of the Center to welcome the DFER team last week.

Under the supervision of Agronomist Eder Audate, Director of the DFER, this campaign focuses on a national reforestation dynamic aimed at restoring degraded forest ecosystems and strengthening plant cover in Haiti.

Agronomist Yves Augustin, Departmental Director of the Center of the Ministry of the Environment, expressed his enthusiasm for the support received from the DFER. He stressed the importance of this activity in meeting the growing demand for fruit and forest tree seeds, essential for the development of nurseries in several municipalities.

During the first collection sessions, the departmental team of the Center, supported by the DFER, targeted a specific list of forest trees including Teak (Tectona grandis), Sandglass (Hura crepitans), Mahogany (Swietenia mahogany) and Cedar (Cedrela odorata), where approximately 577 kg have already been collected.

Once harvested, these seeds will undergo a rigorous treatment process, guaranteeing their viability and maximum germination potential. Within four months, they will give rise to seedlings in the nursery, ready to be used for the next reforestation campaigns, specified Agronomist Audate.
