iciHaiti - Environment : France and the preservation of mangroves

As part of his mission to the Northwest, French Ambassador to Haiti Antoine Michon visited the locality of Hauts-Fourneaux, where he witnessed the essential work of the Haitian Biodiversity Fund (FHB), supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), to preserve the mangroves.

Located approximately 4 km from downtown Port-de-Paix, the Haut-Fourneau mangrove is a strategic ecosystem covering approximately 270 hectares, including 100 hectares of mangrove forest. A true carbon sink, a natural shield against storms, and a reservoir of biodiversity, this mangrove protects several thousand residents spread across more than 14 communities in the 6th communal section of Paulin-Lacorne and supports the livelihoods of many families.

France is proud to support this project, led locally by the Local Development Support Group (GADEL), a Haitian non-profit organization, which perfectly illustrates the link between environmental protection, resilience to climate change, and sustainable development of local communities.

Learn more about mangroves :

A mangrove is a marine marsh ecosystem comprising specific, primarily woody plants that thrive in the "foreshore" zone located between the limits defined by the highest and lowest tides. In all mangroves, there are different types of mangroves, both shrubs and trees, that tolerate saline environments and thrive in shallow coastal tropical waters. Mangrove roots limit coastal erosion and protect communities from tropical storms, while also providing a fragile ecosystem rich in marine invertebrates and juvenile fish.
