iciHaiti - Japan : Food aid worth 1 million USD
On December 17, 2025, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) received a generous contribution of US$1 million from the Government of Japan to address the urgent food needs of communities affected by Hurricane Melissa.

Thanks to this contribution, 1,634 households will receive immediate food assistance covering 15 days, strengthening their immediate nutritional stability and supporting their efforts to recover from the consequences of this major weather event.

"The interventions carried out to date demonstrate that WFP is the partner of choice to help Haitians prepare for and recover from shocks such as extreme weather events. This demonstration of solidarity from the Government of Japan is crucial in supporting communities affected by Hurricane Melissa https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-46098-haiti-flash-41-victims-13-missing-provisional-report-from-melissa.html This contribution allows us to act even more effectively to combat hunger and support the resilience of the most vulnerable families," said Wanja Kaaria, WFP Country Director in Haiti.

It should be noted that Hurricane Melissa, which severely impacted Haiti’s southern peninsula in late October 2025, occurred within a context already marked by a multifaceted and protracted humanitarian crisis, persistent food insecurity, and forced displacement. Melissa affected more than 1.25 million people, including 360,000 who were already suffering from acute food insecurity in the hardest-hit communities.

"The people of Japan stand with the Haitian people in this new ordeal facing the country. Our partnership with the WFP demonstrates our commitment to protecting lives and promoting food security in disaster-stricken areas," said the Representative of the Government of Japan.

Thanks to this new contribution, the WFP continues to deliver food aid to the most difficult-to-reach areas.
