iciHaiti - CPT : Message from outgoing Councilor Smith Augustin 07/02/2026 09:04:35
On this February 7, 2026, the date marking the end of the mandate of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), I wish first and foremost to thank you for the honor bestowed upon me to serve our country at this high level of responsibility. The transition is now entering a new phase. In this regard, I extend my best wishes for success to Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, who is called upon to lead the transition process and the national dialogue toward achieving the essential objectives of restoring peace, security, and constitutional order. I am leaving my presidential office without bitterness, with genuine concern for the future of our country, but without losing hope. As a teacher, researcher, and human rights activist, I will return to my academic and activist work, convinced that education, the development of critical thinking, the transmission of knowledge, and the struggle for a more just world are essential to national reconstruction.” The Republic is stronger when we reject fear and fight ignorance as much as lies and division. These twenty-two months of service at the CPT have been marked by trials, serious accusations, and smear campaigns, the consequences of which my loved ones have sadly suffered. To all those who have gone through these difficult times alongside me, I express my deepest gratitude. Faced with these storms, I have always chosen serenity, truth, faith in justice, respect for institutions, and a rejection of hatred. This experience has tested me as much as it has shaped me. It has not been without errors or imperfect decisions, but I have consistently acted in accordance with republican values, driven by the desire to serve the public interest. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, I have represented Haiti on the international stage, notably at the Organization of American States and the CELAC-European Union summit, to emphasize that the insecurity plaguing our country constitutes a transnational challenge requiring sincere cooperation that respects our sovereignty. I have also supported the strengthening of higher education and research through an increased budget for the State University of Haiti and the creation of the Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research, as well as concrete progress in access to justice, particularly through the establishment and opening of new civil courts across the country. In a particularly challenging security and institutional context, I have worked alongside my colleagues to lay the groundwork for the stabilization of the State. While time has not yet allowed for a full assessment of the results, I remain convinced that these efforts will bear fruit. To the Haitian youth, I make this solemn appeal: do not be afraid to commit yourselves. Serving the State with ethics, courage, and discipline remains a duty and an honor. Even when the path is strewn with unjust misunderstandings, envy, or betrayals, continue to prepare yourselves. Haiti needs competent, honest, and resilient women and men to transform collective suffering into a national project. Finally, to my colleagues and political comrades in RED, EDE, and Compromis Historique, beyond our occasional disagreements, I thank you for your trust and support. The history of our Nation continues to be written, and, true to my convictions, I will remain present. Long live the Republic ! Long live the Haitian Nation !" Smith Augustin, Outgoing Member of the CPT IH/ iciHaiti
