iciHaiti - Covid-19 : Activation of the humanitarian corridor between DR and Haiti

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) has confirmed the activation for the first time of the humanitarian corridor between the Dominican Republic and Haiti https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-30968-icihaiti-wfp-opening-of-a-humanitarian-corridor-for-haiti-from-the-dr.html to send aid to Haiti to respond to the pandemic of Covid-19. A first shipment of medical supplies has been transferred from a Red Cross warehouse in Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince, where these kits have benefited nearly 2,000 people.

Jean-Pierre Guiteau, President of the Haitian Red Cross (CRH) recalled that the creation of a humanitarian corridor had been envisaged since last year, following the major socio-political crisis that had paralyzed the country, stressing "The humanitarian corridor is, without a doubt, a very useful tool, which must be perfected and supported by Haiti and the Dominican Republic for the benefit of both countries during emergency situations."

The goal of the Red Cross is that the corridor will continue to operate in the future to respond to any type of emergency. "The humanitarian corridor is a mechanism that we are developing to facilitate the response to disasters between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. We activated it for the first time, but the goal is to have something that works for the future," said Raphael Hamoir, IFRC Disaster Management Coordinator for the region.
